Debes echarlo de la casa

Querida Karin,

I have three questions for clarification...

  1. Yo hubiera = I would have (past tense/conditional?)
  2. Deberías = ??? (You should have, "conditional" right?)
  3. botar = (1) to invalidate, (2) to kick out (3) eject/expel?
e.g. "Debes botarlo de la casa." = "You should kick him out of the house."

And I am familiar with the term "echar", which I did NOT learn in school but only learned by listening to how native speakers talk. My understanding is that "echar" means "to throw (away)". e.g."Debes echarlo de la casa." = "You should throw him out of the house."

Muy atentamente,

Sra. Lami ~

Querida Lami,

Permíteme ayudarte a aclarar tus dudas.

  1. Yo hubiera... / Hubiera... = I would have...

Esta conjugación se conoce como pluscuamperfecto de subjuntivo. Por eso no me gustan los nombre gramaticales, jajaja. El equivalente en inglés es el third / perfect conditional. El enunciado correcto sería: Yo lo hubiera echado. El objeto directo va antes del verbo.

  2. Deberías... = You should...
    Debiste... = You should have...

"Deberías" corresponde al condicional y significa que hay algo que puedes hacer. "Debiste" corresponde al pretérito perfecto simple e implica que pudiste hacer algo (en el pasado) pero no lo hiciste.

Aquí puedes encontrar todas las conjugaciones de deber y haber:

  3. El "American Heritage Spanish Dictionary" indica:

    1. to fling, hurl
    2. colloquial (despedir) - to dismiss, fire
    3. (MARITIME) - to turn
    4. (lanzar al agua) - to launch
    5. AMERICA: (tirar) - to throw away
    6. (malgastar) - to waste, squander

    1. (arrojar) - to throw, cast, toss
    2. (expulsar) - to throw out, expel
    3. (destituir) - to dismiss, fire
    4. (desechar) - to throw out (or away)
    5. (derramar) - to shed
    6. (emitir) - to emit, give off
    7. (verter) - to pour
    8. (añadir) - to add, put in
    9. (BOTANY) - to sprout, begin to grow
    10. (los dientes) - to cut
    11. (tomar) - to take
    12. (aplicar) - to put on, apply
    13. (imponer) - to impose, give
    14. (condenar) - to condemn, sentence
    15. (las cartas) - to deal
    16. (apostar) - to wager, gamble
    17. (llave) - to turn
    18. (cerrojo) - to shoot
    19. (publicar) - to publish, issue
    20. (representar) - to put on, present
    21. (pronunciar) - to give, deliver
    22. (presentar) - to bring, present
    23. (conjeturar) - to attribute, guess to be
    24. (adquirir) - to develop, get

¡Como puedes ver, el significado de "echar" es mucho más amplio!
