At the Phone

Answering the phone is one of the most common activities in our day-to-day life. First, let's learn some basic vocabulary. Then, we'll learn how to use it in real conversations.

Basic Vocabulary

• Telephone number = Número telefónico
• Phone Line = Línea telefónica
• Answering machine = Máquina Contestadora (or just “contestadora")
• Phone book = Directorio telefónico, Guía telefónica, Guía de teléfonos
• Ring = Timbre
• Dial tone = Tono
• Operator = Operador(a)
  
• Toll-free = Llame sin costo
• Phone call = Llamada telefónica
• Collect call = Llamada por cobrar
• International call = Llamada internacional
• Local call = Llamada local
• Long distance call = Llamada de larga distancia
• To call s.o. = Llamar a alguien (por teléfono).
• To give s.o. a ring = Darle un timbrazo/telefonazo a alguien
• To dial a number = Marcar un número
• To redial = Volver a marcar
• To make a phone call = Hacer una llamada telefónica
• To place a call = Llamar, Preparar/Hacer una llamada (También "Poner en línea a alguien")
• To put a call through = Transferir una llamada
  
• To ring = Timbrar, Sonar
• To vibrate = Vibrar
• To call collect = Llamar por cobrar
• To pick up the phone = Contestar el teléfono
• To hang up = Colgar
• To leave a message = Dejar un mensaje
• To be cut off = Cortarse la llamada
• To call/ring s.o. back = Llamar de vuelta, Devolver la llamada
• To call back later = Llamar de nuevo más tarde
• To send a text message = Enviar un mensaje de texto
• To hold on = esperar, no colgar

Answering the Phone
There are several ways to answer the phone in English. For example, British people use to say their phone number (e.g. 43097141 speaking) while Americans use to answer with a greeting (e.g. Hello). The same happens in Spanish, but here are some guidelines you can follow.

I. Answering

- Hello	- Aló
- This is Mary / Mary speaking	- Le atiende María (For companies)

II. Asking for someone

- May/Could/Can I speak to …?	- ¿Me puede comunicar con…?
- I’d like to speak to…	- Quisiera hablar con…
- Can I have extension 321?	- ¿Me comunica con la extensión…?
- Is Peter in?	- ¿Está Pedro?

III. Asking who is on the phone

- Who is calling? - Excuse me, who is this?

- ¿De parte de quién? - ¿Quién le desea hablar?

IV. Notifying someone he/she is wanted on the phone

- Mr. Roberts is calling (you)	- Te/lo/la llama el Sr. Roberts
- You’re wanted on the phone	- Te/lo/la llaman por teléfono - Tiene una llamada telefónica

V. Connecting Someone

- Can you hold the line? - Can you hold on a moment? - Please hold. - Just a moment, please.	- Permítame. - Permítame un momento. - Espere un momento, por favor. - Un momento / un segundo, por favor.
- I’ll put you through	- Lo/La comunico.
- I’m transferring your call	- Voy a transferir su llamada

VI. Taking a Message

- Could (Can, May) I take a message?	- ¿Puedo tomar su mensaje?
- Could (Can, May) I tell him/her who is calling?	- ¿Desea que le indique quién lo/la llamó?
- Would you like to leave a message?	- ¿Desea dejar un mensaje?

VII. Other phrases

- I'll phone back later.	- Llamaré/Intentaré más tarde.
- You've got the wrong number - Sorry, wrong number.	- Número equivocado. - Está equivocado(a).
- The line's busy.	- Está ocupado.
- There is no reply.	- No contestan.
- I’ve been cut off.	- Se cortó la llamada.
- I am getting bad (poor) reception.	- La señal (o la recepción) es mala. / Tengo mala señal
- The line is breaking up.	- Se está cortando la llamada. / Estoy perdiendo señal.

Here's an example of message:

Hello, this is Tom's phone. I'm afraid I'm not in at the moment. Please leave a message after the beep and I'll call you back ASAP.....
(beep)

(Rin... Rin... Rin...)
Usted se ha comunicado al teléfono de Tom. En este momento no puedo atenderle. Al escuchar el tono, por favor deje su (nombre, teléfono y) mensaje y yo le devolveré la llamada tan pronto como me sea posible.
